Amy Richard

A native of Miami, Florida, Amy Richard’s life-long connection with the natural environment began while exploring coastal waters and mangrove forests as a child. Her passion for art was later set in motion at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas where she studied painting, drawing, art history and sculpture, completing a BFA in 1984. Since then, she has worked as an artist, science writer and educator. A fascination with hand papermaking processes led Richard to recently complete an MFA in Book Arts at the University of Iowa with a focus on Asian papermaking techniques and sculpture (2016).

Her recent work is a response to liber naturae (the Book of Nature), an idea tracing back to ancient philosophers who considered the natural world a source of limitless “text” to be studied as a “symbolic repository of divine wisdom” (Augustine).

Richard currently lives in Gainesville, Florida where she works in her studio and teaches.
