Coptic Stitch Binding

*Virtual Workshop*

Coptic binding is considered the first true codices and it’s long standing history and technique has withstood the test of time. This one day workshops will introduce you to the Coptic stitch binding from cover to cover. You will learn how to create a small book with a single needle approach and a multiple needle approach. Students will master the basic structure and rhythm needed to complete a single book, or graduate to more complicated stitch techniques.

(1979, Cleveland, OH) Jenniffer Omaitz lives and works out of her studio in Kent, OH. She holds an M.F.A. in painting from Kent State University and a B.F.A. in painting from the Cleveland Institute of Art. Omaitz is Abstract Painter and Installation artist with a practice that spans over 18 years. In 2016, Omaitz started JC Marbling after 14 months of independent research and experimentation with the process.

JC Marbling & Book Arts was founded to pursue the practice of marbling, book arts, and as a teaching outreach for the craft of marbling. She currently sells her handmade books and cards at the Morgan Paper Conservatory, BayArts in Bay Village, Ohio; Uncommon Art in Hudson and Heights Arts in Cleveland. and

Supply List 

Students are responsible for the following supplies 

  • Bone folder

  • Curved needles

  • Corked back ruler

  • Waxed linen thread or cord 4ply (at least 4 yrds)

  • PVA glue

  • Brush and dish for applying glue

  • Extra paper and supplies (if you’d like to make more than one book)

  • Awl

  • Scissors

  • Needle nose pliers (if you have)

  • Xacto knife

  • 24 sheets of drawing paper/heavier stock paper

  • Chipboard; double ply or book board
