NECK OF THE WOODS is a celebration of the homegrown. The artists in this exhibition are unified by their exploration of familiar territories and the inspiration they draw from everyday surroundings and the natural world.

ANDREA PETERSON is an internationally exhibiting artist and educator. Her work is multifaceted exploring all types of paper fibers and processes and includes paper works, prints, artist books, and environmental installation pieces. She combines paper arts, printmaking and book arts to make works that address human relationship to the environment. She received her BFA at School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her MFA in printmaking from U of MN in Minneapolis. She has lectured and taught extensively including at Ox-Bow, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Sciola de Graphica, Venice, Italy, Paper Museum Steyermeuhl, Austria, Syracuse University and Indiana University. You can find her work in several private and corporate collections.

SAMANTHA PARKER SALAZAR (b. Chicago, 1989) creates cut paper installations, prints, and drawings. Salazar was the 2014-15 John Fergus Post-MFA Fellow at the Ohio State University in Columbus, OH. where she also served as a lecturer in the printmaking area. Salazar received her MFA from The University of Texas at Austin in 2014 and her BFA from Bradley University in 2011. Her exhibition record includes national and international venues as well as public and private collections. Salazar lives and works from her studio in Columbus, OH.

GAYLORD SCHANILEC is an artist, writer, letterpress printer, designer and illustrator who has set the standard for contemporary artist’s books over the last 30 years. His highly collected and unique fine press books explore his interests and experiences as well as his hometown landscape and community. From farming culture and the rivers of the Mississippi, to an exhaustive inventory of the 24 species of trees surrounding his Stockholm, Wisconsin home and studio, Schanilec’s wood engravings illustrate local landscapes, historical anecdotes and natural science investigations. Schanilec has also explored subjects far from home, including two books about New York City. Schanilec’s latest project, Lac Des Pleurs, is a study of the 22-mile length of the upper Mississippi River known as Lake Pepin.

LISA SCHONBERG is a printmaker and teacher. She received her MFA in Printmaking from Kent State University and her BFA from Ohio University. Lisa explores the world of printmaking through a variety of processes including relief, intaglio and monoprinting. Her image ideas are derived from an inquisitive observation of the natural world and the premise that many forms and phenomena in nature have close relationships with the various phases in human life.

Currently, Lisa teaches printmaking and design courses at Baldwin Wallace University and Notre Dame College. Her teaching career spans 36 years and includes a variety of experiences from teaching in public schools (K-12) to artists’ residencies, internships and colleges. She has exhibited her work in juried, invitational and solo shows since 1984 and has artwork in the collections of the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Lisa is a resident artist at Zygote Press where she makes prints and also teaches and volunteers. Last fall she was one of two recipients of the Zygote/Ohio Arts Council sponsored Dresden Artist Exchange Residency in Germany.
