Medieval Manuscripts and Illuminated Letters

This one day workshop will introduce you to blackletter calligraphy and illumination with precious metals.

Date + Time

Jun 05, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Morgan Conservatory, 1754 E 47th St, Cleveland, OH 44103, USA

About

Medieval manuscripts are intricately designed, handwritten books that contain three key elements that “light up” the page: golden-ratio-based page design, blackletter calligraphy, and illumination with precious metals. After a historical overview, you will learn how to plan a folio using Tschichold’s Golden Canon, hand-draw versals (capital letters) on parchment, gild versals with genuine gold leaf, and paint versals using traditional Medieval colors. You will complete two to three versals by the end of the day.
