Japanese Wraparound Case

The Japanese wraparound case, or hako chitsu, is the perfect way to store and protect a diverse array of objects. Upon opening the case you find an open-faced box— perfect for holding any object you decide to protect. During this workshop you will learn how to create a traditional Japanese hinged case with a tray made out of binders board, and a clasped closure.

Amy Childress is a book artist, writer, and arts educator in Iowa City, IA. She received her MLS from the University of Iowa and is currently an MFA candidate at the University of Iowa Center for the Book. In the Summer of 2019, Childress received a project grant from the Iowa Arts Council to develop a mobile book arts studio. She is an advocate for inclusive art education, and has taught workshops for adults, teens, and kids at numerous libraries around the Iowa City area, as well as for the Iowa Youth Writing Project. Childress grew up next to the Wasatch Mountains in Salt Lake City. She first fell in love with book arts at the Book Arts Program at the University of Utah. Her work explores the subtle moments that happen in nature and within interpersonal relationships. She is the Secretary/Treasurer for the Midwest Chapter of the Guild of Bookworkers.

Supply List 

Students are responsible for the following supplies 

  • Scissors

  • Pencil

  • Ruler 

  • Cutting mat 

  • Exacto Knife or scalpel 

  • Teflon Folder (preferred) or bone folder

  • ½ yard book cloth of choice

  • ¼" Chisel

  • Decorative paper at least 18" x 24"

  • Bone or wood clasps 

  • Weights/book weights

  • PVA 

  • Glue brush

  • Newsprint/glue paper

  • A sheet of Sandpaper 

  • Optional supplies:

    • 3” metal triangle ruler

    • .5” brass or steel strip

    • Rubber eraser 

    • Hammer

    • Plastic glue applicator
