J.A.SZ Longstitch Bookbinding

Taught by Jim Croft

The J.A.SZ longstitch book is a beautiful and unique binding structure, as well as Jim Croft’s specialty. You will create each element of your book from start to finish, beginning with splitting cedar wood on the quarter to create your book boards, and then attaching a Chinese hemp textile spine. After making your wood board case, you will complete your book by sewing in your textblock with an Italian longstitch and bead-in-front endbands using Chinese hemp thread. You will leave this workshop with a beautiful book, and a deeper understanding of the “old ways of making books”.

Jim Croft is a Medieval bookbinder and papermaker who has been binding since 1970. He is internationally known for his skill, and since 2008 he has enjoyed a refreshing side career making and teaching the wood board – textile spine longstitch binding structure. Jim’s focus is on the materials and structure of a book, and teaches the “Old Ways of Making Books,” which includes making tools, thread, and paper, along with wood boards and brass clasps, on his 39 ½ acres in northern Idaho.
