Medieval Manuscripts and Illuminated Letters
Taught by Madison Bennett
Medieval manuscripts are intricately designed, handwritten books that contain three key elements that “light up” the page: golden-ratio-based page design, blackletter calligraphy, and illumination with precious metals. After a historical overview, you will learn how to plan a folio using Tschichold’s Golden Canon, hand-draw versals (capital letters) on parchment, gild versals with genuine gold leaf, and paint versals using traditional Medieval colors. You will complete two to three versals by the end of the day.
Madison Bennett is a lettering artist and MFA Candidate at the University of Iowa Center for the Book where she focuses on calligraphy and contemporary palimpsests. You can check out some of her work on Instagram.
