A Collaboration with Praxis Fiber Workshop
Taught by Erin Miller and Laura Rowley
During this weekend long workshop, you will have the opportunity to learn and combine skills in dyeing fabric with natural dye and using this cloth to cover a handbound book. The first day you will learn the natural dye processes with Erin Miller at Praxis Fiber Workshop. The following day, you will bring your dyed cloth to the Morgan and learn how to turn the material into book cloth. You will create your unique book by learning how to prepare sections, construct a hardcover case, and sew the sections in a long and link binding. Each student will leave with a finished blank book, about 5.5 inches wide by 8.5 inches tall.
Erin R Miller’s work explores the intimacy and fragility of the human relationship with cloth using a variety of textile processes. She received her MFA in Fibers from Eastern Michigan University in and her BFA in Textiles from Kent State University. Her work has been exhibited internationally with recent exhibitions at The Bonded Llama in Raleigh North Carolina and Praxis Fiber Workshop in Cleveland Ohio. She is currently Head of Weaving in Student Crafts Department at Berea College in Berea Kentucky.
Laura Rowley is a bookbinding instructor at the Rochester Institute of Technology and founder of Illuminated Press. She creates small editions of handmade artist's books and journals and teaches community classes. She first discovered her passion for book art at Wells College then earned her MFA from the University of Alabama in 2014.
