Hong Hong & Claudio Orso-Giacone

Join us for a talk with our National Endowment for the Arts Apprentices.
Stay and shop handmade goods, this talk will be during the opening weekend of Morgan Market.
During Hong’s artist talk, she will be discussing recent, paper-based projects as well as connections between imprint and body, landscape and divinity, ritual and time, labor and death.
Claudio will be discussing the interaction between his large-scale prints and papermaking. He will expand on the ways in which the comfort he finds in experimenting with pulps has lead to opening a discourse of color in his large-scale prints that are generally stern and monochromatic.
Pizza, beverages, and an interesting dialogue will be provided.

About Hong Hong:
Hong is an interdisciplinary artist who works at the intersection between monumental paper-making and performative painting. Born in China, she immigrated, with her mother, to North Dakota when she was ten years old. Hong earned her MFA in Painting and Drawing from University of Georgia in 2014 and her BFA from the State University of New York at Potsdam in 2011. Since then, Hong has traveled to different locations across the United States to make site-responsive, large-scale paperworks. These nomadic inquiries have led her to the edge of an alkali lake, a grove of paper-mulberries in the Rust Belt, street corners, the Pacific Ocean, and strangers’ backyards. Her projects have been exhibited at Madison Museum of Fine Art, Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, New Mexico History Museum, Real Art Ways, and Georgia Museum of Art. Hong is the recipient of grants, fellowships and commissions from MacDowell, Yaddo, Foundation for Contemporary Arts, Vermont Studio Center, Center for the Arts at Wesleyan University, Virginia Beach Arts and Humanities Commission, Connecticut Office for the Arts, and the Edward C. & Ann T. Roberts Foundation.
About Claudio Orso:
Claudio makes woodblock prints, paper puppets and ceramic sculptures; coming from Turin, Italy, he has been living in Ohio for eighteen years, got his MFA in printmaking at Bowling Green State University, and received the Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award in 2004. He worked and taught art in a wide range of situations and events, national and international residencies, the Oberlin Big Parade and the Cleveland Parade the Circle, and a puppet opera performed by the Oberlin Conservatory Orchestra. Since 2010 he has been coordinator of Apollo Outreach at Oberlin College, a college course workshop in media literacy serving young and elderly learners.
