During this workshop, participants will learn how to create a traditional Japanese hinged case (chitsu) also called a wraparound case or Japanese portfolio. Participants will learn how to create a tray out of binders and then fit their wraparound case to their tray.
Instructor Bio:
Amy Childress is a book artist, writer, and librarian residing next to the Wasatch Mountains in
Salt Lake City, Utah. She completed her MFA at the University of Iowa Center for the Book in
2021 and her MLS from the University of Iowa in 2020. Childress earned a BA in English with
a minor in Anthropology and TESOL and Book Arts certifications from the University of
Utah. She has studied European, Eastern and Indo-Islamic Papermaking techniques with
Timothy Barrett and Nicholas Cladis. In the Summer of 2019, Childress received a University of
Iowa Graduate College Summer Fellowship as well as a project grant from the Iowa Arts
Council to develop a mobile book arts studio. She has taught book arts workshops at various
libraries in Iowa and Utah, as well as for the Morgan Paper Conservatory. In 2020, she
was awarded a Caxton Club grant for her thesis book, Inhabited. Her artist books and broadsides
are held in private collections in the United States and abroad. Her work explores the parallel
between the subtle moments that happen in nature and in interpersonal relationships.

Newsprint/glue paper (this can be any paper you can get glue on)
Decorative paper at least 18" x 24"
A sheet of Sandpaper
Wax paper
