In this class we will create folded books that require no adhesive. Many of the forms can be made from a single sheet of paper. One of the pieces we'll be making can be used as either a book cover or as a signature in a sewn book, and other pieces include hidden pockets. Structures include the Blizzard Book, Fishbone Binding, and Diagonal Pocket Folder. Each participant will leave class with a completed set of 6 books and a basic knowledge of folding and bookbinding technique. You will receive a detailed handout and resource list for all materials we use. Experience in origami is helpful, but not required.
Instructor will send out material kit prior to your workshop.
Students are responsible for the following supplies:
- Bone folder
- X-Acto Knife
- 12” metal ruler
- Cutting Mat
- 6 mm (0.25”) craft foam sheet
- 2 yards unwaxed linen thread in student’s choice of color
Elissa Campbell has been making books for the past twenty-six years and works out of her studio in Montpelier, Vermont. She is a big believer in the power of using books for self-expression - she received her MA in Expressive Therapies with a concentration in Art Therapy from Lesley University and her experience drives her to create objects that allow people to tell their stories. She has been teaching bookbinding workshops for 12 years and is chair of the Book Arts Guild of Vermont.
