Pochoir, or stenciling, is an engaging method of printing without equipment, and can even be done on three-dimensional surfaces. Class will begin by discussing the best materials and techniques for creating simple, detailed, and multi-layered stencils. You will create your own images by cutting new stencils, using existing stencils, adapting everyday objects into stencils, and experimenting with various inking techniques. This workshop is great for all levels of experience
Instructor Bio:
Beth Sheehan is a visual artist and educator. She has worked as a professional printer at Durham Press in Pennsylvania and at Harlan and Weaver in New York and was also the Lead Binder/Bindery Manager at Small Editions in Brooklyn. Sheehan teaches paper, print, and book workshops through organizations around the country and she co-authored the book Bookforms: A Complete Guide to Designing and Crafting Hand-Bound Books, 2019.
Supply List:
Students are responsible for the following supplies
- Paper to print on (any paper works!)
- 1 pack of DuraLar or Acetate sheets
- Cutting tool (X-acto, Olfa knife, or scalpel)
- Images to make into stencils
- Sharpie
- Apron (optional)
- Ink or paint
- Lunch and a beverage
