Pulp to Print: Screen Printing on Handmade Paper Joint Workshop with the Morgan and Zygote Press

In this joint workshop students will meet at the Morgan Conservatory Saturday, July 23 and Sunday, July 24th from 10am-4pm to learn every step of the papermaking process with instructor Tom Balbo. Students will also pigment fiber and form sheets of abaca as the canvas for pulp paintings. With the sheet still in the mould and deckle, students will paint and stencil using colored cotton mixed with formation aid, overlapping and mixing pigmented fiber to create atmospheric, watercolor-like papers as well as graphic artworks.
The following Saturday, July 30th from 10am-4pm, the class will meet at Zygote Press to learn the process of screen printing with instructor Anna Tararova. Students will be able to print text, patterns, photographs, and illustrations on their handmade papers as well as store-bought papers.
Morgan Instructor Bio:
Tom Balbo is a Cleveland-based artist whose work has been collected for well over 30 years. Graduating from Baldwin-Wallace College with a BA in 1977, he completed his MFA in Studio Arts at Syracuse University in 1980 where he was awarded a Syracuse University Fellowship Grant and a Ford Foundation Grant.
In 2007, Tom teamed up with noted Cleveland-area artists and national hand papermaking artists to improve and conserve the art of paper & book arts educational programming in the US. Knowing that these were art forms worth preserving, the Morgan Art of Papermaking Conservatory and Educational Foundation officially opened its doors in October 2008.
